Sims 4 localthumbcache Explained

The localthumbcache file is one of the easiest Sims 4 cleanup steps, but it can feel confusing if you have never touched it before.

What is localthumbcache?

localthumbcache.package is a cache file in your The Sims 4 folder. The game uses it to remember preview images and stored data. When mods change, this file can hold onto old information.

When should you delete it?

  • After removing broken CC
  • After updating major gameplay mods
  • After a patch day cleanup
  • When CAS thumbnails look wrong
  • When a removed mod still seems to affect the game

Where is it?

Go to Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. The file is usually inside the main Sims 4 folder, not inside Mods.

Good news: Deleting localthumbcache is normal. The game will recreate it the next time it launches.

What not to delete by accident

Do not delete your Saves folder, Tray folder, Mods folder, or Screenshots folder unless you already made a backup and know exactly why you are removing them.
